A flexo sleeve is a lightweight tube that carries the printing plate and slides onto a press mandrel on a film of compressed air. On a sleeve press, repeat comes from the sleeve's outside diameter plus the plate and tape buildup, not from a gear's tooth count. That makes the sleeve a piece of tooling with its own identity, dimensions, and condition.

This note covers plate-mounting sleeves for narrow-, mid-, and wide-web flexo. Anilox sleeves follow similar handling rules but are a separate topic.

How a sleeve mounts

Air flows through holes in the mandrel and slightly expands the sleeve's bore. The operator pushes the sleeve into position, shuts off the air, and the sleeve contracts to grip the mandrel. Removal reverses the process. A thin-walled bridge mandrel patent describes this air-mount method and the compressible layer inside the sleeve that allows the expansion.

Because the plate can be mounted off press, a shop can pre-mount plates on sleeves for quick changeovers. Mounted sleeves can also be stored for repeat jobs.

Sleeve types

  • Thin plate-mounting sleeves. The standard carrier for mounting tape and plate. Wall thickness is set by the repeat the press needs.
  • Thick sleeves or repeat builders. Thicker walls add circumference, so a single mandrel can print a longer repeat.
  • Bridge sleeves (adapters). A bridge sits between the mandrel and a thinner print sleeve. Continental notes that bridges reduce sleeve weight, wall thickness, and cost, and let one shaft cover a wide repeat range.
  • Compressible sleeves. These have a cushioned outer surface, and the rotec product sheet recommends standard hard tape rather than cushion tape. XSYS specifies its rotec Compressible Sleeve at ±0.025 mm for outside diameter and runout. Results vary by job, so trial them against the current tape setup before switching.

Repeat math on a sleeve

Print repeat equals pi times the print-surface diameter. To find the bare sleeve diameter, subtract twice the plate-plus-tape thickness:

Sleeve OD = (repeat ÷ π) − 2 × (plate + tape)

For a 400 mm repeat with a 1.14 mm plate on 0.50 mm tape, the print diameter is about 127.32 mm. The required sleeve OD is about 124.04 mm. Use the repeat length calculator to check the numbers, then confirm the press OEM's effective repeat and any squeeze allowance.

The sleeve also sets the plate distortion factor. If a rerun moves to a different sleeve or press, the plate needs a new repeat check before it is imaged.

Keep sleeves round and true

Total indicated runout, or TIR, measures how far a rotating surface deviates from a true circle. Runout causes impression variation around the repeat. FLEXO Magazine guidance recommends:

  • Store sleeves standing on end. Hanging them horizontally on a pipe can gradually distort their shape.
  • Push and twist a sleeve onto the mandrel at the OEM air pressure instead of rocking it into place.
  • Cut tape on a built-in cut line. Razor cuts into the sleeve surface change diameter and TIR over time.

Solvent and moisture exposure can also degrade some urethane sleeve surfaces and reduce concentricity, according to an FTA technical article. Follow the supplier's cleaning and storage instructions.

Record the sleeve with the job

A plate distorted for one sleeve will not register correctly on another. Keep these details on the job record:

  • Press, mandrel or bridge, and sleeve ID
  • Sleeve OD or wall thickness and the approved print repeat
  • Plate gauge, tape type and thickness, and distortion factor
  • Whether the plates ship loose or mounted, and where mounted sleeves are stored
  • The latest runout check or condition note for the sleeve

That record connects to the cylinder inventory, the plate mounting specification, and plate storage for reruns. The next order then starts from the approved sleeve and buildup rather than from memory.

Common questions

What is a flexo sleeve?

A flexo sleeve is a lightweight tube that carries the mounting tape and printing plate. Compressed air from the press mandrel expands the sleeve slightly so it can slide into place; when the air stops, the sleeve grips the mandrel.

What is the difference between a bridge sleeve and a print sleeve?

A bridge sleeve, or adapter, sits between the mandrel and a thinner print sleeve. It builds diameter so one mandrel can run a wider repeat range, while the print sleeve carries the tape and plate.

How do you calculate the sleeve diameter for a flexo repeat?

Divide the print repeat by pi to get the print-surface diameter, then subtract twice the plate-plus-tape thickness. Confirm the result against the press OEM's effective repeat and squeeze allowance.

How should flexo sleeves be stored?

Store sleeves standing on end, clean and dry, and follow the supplier's instructions. Hanging sleeves horizontally on a pipe can gradually distort their roundness and increase runout.
