Flexo plate storage: protecting plates and finding the right set for every rerun
Flexo plate storage protects photopolymer plates from light, ozone, heat, curl, and surface damage. Learn the storage rules—and the plate record needed to retrieve the correct set for a rerun.
Flexo plate storage has two jobs: protect the plate from damage and make sure the shop can retrieve the correct set for a rerun. A plate can be physically intact and still be unusable if nobody can confirm its customer, artwork revision, print condition, or storage location.
That is why a rack is only half of the system. The other half is a plate record tied to the job.
Store the plate clean, dry, dark, and protected
Finished photopolymer plates remain sensitive to their environment. Manufacturer and industry guidance consistently calls for protection from light, ozone, heat, contamination, and surface pressure.
A practical storage routine is:
- Clean the plate promptly. Use a cleaner compatible with the ink and plate system, then make sure the plate is fully dry before it is packed.
- Protect the print surface. Miraclon recommends storing plates face down and flat when possible, with the original white foam interleaved between clean, dry plates.
- Block UV exposure. Seal the plate set in brown kraft paper or an opaque poly bag. UV exposure can harden or yellow a finished plate and change ink release.
- Keep it away from ozone and heat. Vents, corona treatment equipment, electrical transformers, and other ozone sources can crack the plate surface. Use a controlled storage area away from temperature extremes.
- Avoid damaging stacks. DuPont guidance says plates should be stored dry, flat, and foam-interleaved, with stacks kept below 6 inches to reduce embossing from weight.
Mounted plates and sleeves need different handling. Miraclon recommends wrapping them in black poly and sealing the ends. Whatever method a shop uses, the plate supplier’s instructions should govern the final storage condition.
Flat, hanging, and rolled storage are not interchangeable
Flat storage is the common recommendation because it limits unwanted plate curl. Hanging or vertical systems can work when the plate pack is supported and protected. Rolled storage saves space, but the roll direction and diameter can train a plate to curl away from the cylinder when it is remounted.
The important point is consistency. If a shop changes how a plate is stored, it should inspect the set before approving it for reuse rather than assuming that an intact package means an unchanged plate.
The minimum plate-storage record
A storage label should identify more than a job number. At minimum, record:
- customer and job number;
- artwork revision and approval status;
- plate set, separation, and color;
- plate material, gauge, and finished size;
- distortion, line screen, and approved screening condition;
- date cleaned and stored;
- rack, drawer, sleeve, or bin location;
- condition at storage and at retrieval;
- reuse, hold, or retirement status.
This is where physical storage becomes part of the production system. The rack location tells the plate room where to look. The job record tells prepress whether the plate is still the right revision and whether its plate, distortion, and screening condition still match the reorder.
Why storage belongs in the job record
A rerun should not begin with somebody walking the racks and guessing from handwriting on kraft paper.
When the plate record is linked to the customer and job, the shop can answer three questions before production starts:
- Do we already have the correct plate set?
- Is that set still approved for this artwork and print condition?
- Where is it, and what condition was it in when stored?
If any answer is missing, the shop risks mounting the wrong revision, repeating an obsolete screening condition, or discovering damaged plates only after the press is waiting.
