Flexo screening software turns print-ready artwork into the dot structures that a plate imager can reproduce. At minimum, it controls the halftone pattern used for tones and color separations. Some systems also add surface patterns to solids, edges, or selected objects to improve ink transfer and print stability.
That makes screening software part of the imaging stack—not the shop’s MIS. The screening engine decides how the plate is imaged. The MIS should preserve which approved screening condition was used, connect it to the customer and job, and carry that specification through reruns, plate production, delivery, and billing.
The three screening layers shops often mix together
“Screening” can describe several different operations:
- RIP and halftone screening. The RIP converts a print-ready PDF into plate-imaging data such as a 1-bit TIFF or LEN file. It applies the plate line screen, screen angles, dot shape, calibration, and tonal curves.
- Hybrid or transitional screening. These methods change dot behavior in highlights, shadows, or transitions. Hybrid Software’s Velvet Screening uses a user-defined transition point and dot removal to control highlights and smoother gradations.

These layers can be sold together or separately. A shop comparing products should ask exactly where each tool sits: before the RIP, inside the RIP, or after ripping on 1-bit imaging data.
What to compare in flexo screening software
Vendor feature lists are useful, but the buying test is the complete production condition.
- Workflow compatibility: accepted input, output format, and integration with the existing workflow, RIP, imager, and plate system.
- Highlight control: minimum stable dot, fade-to-zero behavior, transition settings, and repeatability at the target line screen.
- Solid and edge performance: ink laydown, pinholing, trailing-edge voids, dot gain, small text, barcodes, and reverses.
- Condition coverage: supported plates, resolutions, substrates, inks, anilox sets, and press types.
- Automation and auditability: reusable presets, object-based rules, approval controls, reporting, and a clear record of which preset produced each plate.
- Support and validation: fingerprinting help, test targets, measurement guidance, training, and a safe path for changing an approved condition.

The approved result is more than a preset name. Record enough detail to reproduce the same plate when the job returns:
- screening product, version, and preset;
- RIP and output format;
- AM, FM, or hybrid method;
- plate line screen, angles, and dot shape;
- transition point, minimum dot, bump/cutoff curve, or highlight rule;
- surface pattern and object-selection rules;
- plate family and gauge;
- imager and resolution;
- customer press, substrate, ink, anilox, and validated print condition.
This specification should travel with the customer and job record. If it lives only inside a RIP queue or an operator’s memory, a rerun can use the same artwork and still produce different highlights, solids, or density.
A flexo-native MIS does not replace the screening engine. It makes the approved screening condition visible and repeatable across estimating, prepress, plate production, QC, delivery, and invoicing. It also makes substitutions obvious before a plate is imaged—for example, when a stored surface pattern is tied to a plate family that is no longer being used.
