Anilox line screen selection: matching cell count to plate screen ruling — and putting the pairing on the job ticket

Anilox line screen is the number of cells per inch on the anilox roll, and it's chosen in correlation to anilox volume and the plate screen ruling it has to feed. Here's how line screen, BCM volume, and the plate-to-anilox ratio fit together — and why the pairing is a per-customer, per-press spec that belongs on the job ticket, not relearned per reorder.

Anilox line screen is the number of engraved cells per linear inch on the anilox roll — the metering roll that transfers a controlled, constant film of ink to the plate. It’s specified alongside cell volume (measured in BCM, billions of cubic microns per square inch), and the two together decide how much ink lands on the plate and how fine a halftone the job can hold.

Line screen selection is a press-side decision on paper. But it’s bounded by a prepress decision — the plate screen ruling — and the two have to be chosen against each other. Most anilox guides on the web are written by roll manufacturers explaining cell geometry to a press operator. None of them cover the part a trade shop actually gets wrong: the anilox spec constrains what prepress is allowed to screen at, so it has to travel back to prepress and live on the customer’s job ticket — or reorders drift.

How line screen and volume fit together

Anilox line screen and volume move in opposite directions. Higher line screen means more, smaller cells, each holding less ink; lower line screen means fewer, larger cells carrying a heavier film. Line screen is chosen in direct correlation to volume — a volume engraved at the wrong line screen gives cells that are either too deep or too shallow to release cleanly.

The rough application map most roll makers publish looks like this:

A low line screen roll carries a thick ink film — good density for solids, too coarse for clean process work. A high line screen roll (800–1200) lays down too little ink to fill a block solid. As the FTA puts it, anilox volume is the single most important factor in ink film thickness, so the roll gets matched to the job, not the other way around.

The plate-to-anilox ratio is where prepress comes in

The connection that makes this a prepress problem, not just a pressroom one, is the ratio between the plate screen ruling and the anilox line screen. The anilox has to be fine enough that the smallest halftone dot on the plate sits across several cells instead of dipping into one.

The industry rule of thumb: anilox line screen should be at least 4 to 6 times the plate screen ruling — many shops treat 6× as the safe minimum, and some run higher. Written as a ratio, film and label work generally assumes about 1:6.5 to 1:7.5 (plate ruling to anilox ruling); corrugated on absorbent stock runs closer to 1:5; extended-cell and channel engravings (GTT-style) can stretch to 1:9 or more.

The practical consequence for prepress:

  • A 150 lpi process plate needs an anilox around 900–1000+ CPI to feed it cleanly. If the finest available anilox is 500, that plate ruling can’t be held — the dots dip into the cells, pick up extra ink, and print with runaway dot gain.
  • Screening a plate finer than the shop’s (or the customer’s) anilox can support doesn’t buy sharper print. It buys dot gain, dirty print, and a rerun — which on a trade shop’s books is billable plate area the customer never authorized.

So the plate screen ruling — a prepress screening decision — is capped by the anilox line screen the job will run on. Prepress can’t pick a ruling in a vacuum; it has to know the anilox.

Why the pairing belongs on the job ticket

This is the part the SERP doesn’t touch, because roll-maker content is written for one operator specifying one roll — not for a shop reproducing the same customer’s job for a decade.

  • The plate-ruling / anilox pairing is a per-customer, per-press rule. A converter running a specific anilox set on a specific press has a plate screen ruling that’s known to hold on their hardware. That pairing should apply to every job they send, not get re-decided at the screening station each time.
  • Rerun integrity. A reorder screened at a different ruling — because the operator guessed, or the customer’s anilox spec lived in someone’s memory — prints differently from the original. The brand owner sees the shift; the shop can’t easily explain it.
  • Handoff ambiguity. If prepress screens to an assumed anilox and the customer actually runs a coarser roll, the job dips and gains. The fix is a documented anilox line screen and volume on the customer record, enforced at intake — not a value relearned per job.

The anilox pairing only stays consistent if it’s attached to the customer and the press, not reinvented on the bench.

What line screen selection does not fix

Choosing the right anilox line screen controls ink film and the finest holdable dot. It does not fix:

  • Dot gain from plate or press. Line screen matching prevents the anilox contribution to dot gain, but plate type, mounting pressure, and press curves still drive tonal growth. Over-tight impression will gain the screens no matter how well the anilox is matched.
  • Register and trapping. White edges at color boundaries are a trapping and register problem, unrelated to cell count.
  • Print length. Repeat and stretch are a plate distortion issue, set at step-and-repeat — the anilox has nothing to do with image length.

Reaching for a finer anilox to rescue a job that’s really a plate or press problem just starves the solids without solving the cause.

Where anilox selection lives in the trade shop

The anilox spec sits on the press side, but the number it constrains — the plate screen ruling — is set in prepress screening. That split is exactly why it has to be a recorded field, not a verbal handoff:

  • Sales and CSR capture the customer’s press and anilox set at intake, in the customer’s terms.
  • Prepress chooses the plate screen ruling against that anilox, so the finest dot is supported and the job doesn’t gain.
  • The customer’s press team validates that the ruling the shop screened for matches the anilox actually mounted.

In shops running on spreadsheets, the customer’s anilox line screen and volume live in an operator’s memory and a note on last year’s job — so consistency depends on the same person screening every rerun.
