Flexo plate relief depth is the height difference between the raised printing surface and the floor of the processed plate. Measure the finished overall plate thickness, measure the floor thickness, and subtract the floor from the total.
Relief is not the same as plate thickness. Plate thickness is the full gauge from the backing to the print surface. Relief describes how far the image stands above the floor after exposure and processing.
That distance is small, but it controls whether non-image areas stay clear and whether fine dots have enough support to survive impression.
Back exposure sets the floor
The back exposure applies UV-A through the plate backing. It establishes the polymer floor that supports the image:
- More back exposure generally raises the floor and makes relief shallower.
- Less back exposure generally lowers the floor and makes relief deeper.
Neither direction is automatically safer. The target depends on the plate family and gauge, exposure system, processing method, image content, and validated press condition. Use the plate manufacturer’s operating window and confirm it with a back-exposure step test rather than copying a time from another material or exposure unit.
The Flexographic Technical Association notes that many manufacturers recommend a step test for each new batch of plate material. Lamp output should also be checked routinely: a time value is not a stable process setting if UV output has drifted.
Too shallow and the floor can print
Shallow relief means the floor sits close to the raised image. Under excess impression, the floor can contact the substrate and leave ink blobs in white space. Excessive back exposure can also make highlight dots print heavy and weaken a smooth fade to zero.
FTA guidance commonly cites 0.018–0.022 in of relief for 0.045-in and 0.067-in plates, but that is a reference window—not a universal target for every plate. Supplier specifications and the shop’s validated condition take priority.
Too deep and fine dots lose support
Deep relief creates more clearance, but it also produces taller, less-supported image structures. Fine highlight dots can lean, fold, or print as dirty blobs near the edge of an image area.
Reducing back exposure to solve a floor-printing problem can therefore create a different defect. The useful question is not “more or less exposure?” It is “does this plate batch, exposure output, and processing condition reproduce the approved relief and minimum dot?”
A practical relief-depth QC record
A trade shop should preserve the condition that produced an approved plate, not only the operator’s exposure time:
- Plate material: supplier, family, gauge, and batch or lot.
- Target relief: the approved range for that plate and print condition.
- Exposure condition: back-exposure step test or preset, unit, and measured UV output.
- Finished measurements: overall caliper, floor thickness, and calculated relief.
- Image QC: minimum dot, shoulder support, floor cleanliness, and any control-strip result.
- Disposition: pass, remake, deviation approval, and the operator who completed the check.
This record matters on reruns. If the plate family, batch, lamp output, or exposure unit changes, the job ticket should make the change visible before imaging.
