Flexo trapping: chokes, spreads, and the trap specs that belong on the job ticket

Flexo trapping is the prepress step that adds a deliberate overlap between adjacent colors so press misregistration doesn't leave white gaps. Flexo needs wider traps than offset — and the trap width, direction, and white cutback are per-customer, per-press rules a trade shop has to apply the same way on every rerun. Here's how trapping works and why it belongs on the job spec.

Flexo trapping is the prepress technique of adding a small, deliberate overlap between two adjacent colors so that if the press drifts out of register, no unprinted sliver of substrate shows through at the seam. It’s a registration insurance policy applied in prepress, before the plate is ever imaged.

Most trapping guides on the web explain it for offset or for design generally. Flexo is a different animal: register tolerance is looser, plates and mounting move, and unsupported films stretch — so flexo traps are wider, and the rules that decide how wide are customer- and press-specific. In a trade shop that runs the same jobs for years, trapping isn’t a one-time judgment call. It’s a spec that has to be reproduced identically on every rerun, or the printed job shifts between runs of “the same” artwork.

What trapping actually does

Where two colors meet, perfect edge-to-edge register is impossible on a running press. Trapping compensates by overlapping the edges slightly:

  • Spread (outset). The lighter of the two colors is expanded so it grows under the darker color. The darker color keeps its edge, so the shape still looks right to the eye.
  • Choke (inset). When a light object sits on a darker background, the background is contracted into the object instead. Again, the dominant (darker) color holds the visible edge.
  • Trap width. How far the overlap extends. Flexo typically runs wider traps than offset — often in the 0.004”–0.008” range and higher on coarse jobs — because flexo register tolerance is looser than litho.
  • White cutback (pullback). On reverses and knockouts printed over film, the white backing is pulled back from the color edge so a register shift doesn’t flash a white halo. Cutback values differ for supported (with liner) versus unsupported film.

The governing rule is consistent: the lighter color spreads into the darker one, so the darker color’s edge stays sharp and the trap hides in the transition.

Why flexo needs wider traps than offset

Trapping exists to absorb misregistration, and flexo has more of it to absorb:

  • Looser register tolerance. Wide-web and mid-web flexo presses hold register to a coarser band than sheetfed offset, so the trap has to be bigger to stay covered when a station drifts.
  • Plate and mounting movement. The plate is mounted to a stickyback on a cylinder; mounting variation and impression pressure move the image slightly relative to the ideal position.
  • Substrate behavior. Unsupported films and some laminates stretch under web tension, adding apparent misregister that a too-thin trap can’t cover.

A trap sized for offset will routinely open up on a flexo press. This is exactly why “borrowed” trap values — pulled from a designer’s offset habit or a generic preset — cause white edges the press operator gets blamed for.

Why trap specs belong on the job ticket

This is the part the SERP doesn’t cover, because most trapping content is written for a designer trapping one file, not a shop trapping the same customer’s files for a decade.

  • Trap width and cutback are per-customer, per-press rules. A converter running a specific press on a specific film has a trap and white-cutback spec that should apply to every job they send. Re-deciding it per job invites drift.
  • Rerun integrity. A reorder has to be trapped with the same values as the original, or the printed result changes between runs of nominally identical artwork — the kind of variance a brand owner notices and a shop can’t easily explain.
  • Handoff ambiguity. If the brand’s design agency traps the file and the trade shop traps it again, edges double up; if both assume the other did it, the job runs untrapped. The fix is a documented, per-customer convention enforced at intake — not a habit living in one operator’s head.

Trapping only stays consistent if the trap spec is attached to the customer and the press, not reinvented on the bench.

What trapping does not fix

Trapping hides misregistration at color boundaries. It does not fix:

  • The register problem itself. Trapping masks drift; it doesn’t tighten the press. Chronic misregister is a press-setup, mounting, or plate distortion issue.
  • Dot gain. Tonal growth on press is handled by screening, plate type, and press curves — not by trap width.
  • Plate length errors. A short or long repeat is a distortion-factor problem, corrected at step-and-repeat, not by overlapping colors.

Widening a trap to cover a press that’s genuinely out of register just makes the overlap visible without solving the cause.

Where trapping lives in the trade shop

Trapping sits in preflight and file prep, between artwork intake and screening — but the spec that drives it is a business rule, not a per-file decision:

  • Prepress applies the trap width, direction, and white cutback when preparing the file for separation.
  • The customer/press spec defines what those values should be for that converter and press.
  • Accounting and CSR care because a job that has to be re-trapped and re-imaged is billable plate area the customer didn’t expect.

In shops running on spreadsheets, the trap spec lives in an operator’s memory and a note on last year’s job — so consistency depends on the same person touching every rerun.
