Automated preflight software for flexo: what it checks, who makes it, and where it stops

Preflight is the gate every artwork file passes through before it costs you a plate. Automated preflight software runs an incoming PDF against a profile — hundreds of checks in seconds — and either auto-corrects the file or flags it for an operator. In a flexographic trade shop it’s the cheapest rework you’ll ever prevent: catching a missing spot color or an unflattened transparency before imaging is free; catching it after the plate is washed out is a remake.
Here’s what automated preflight actually does, who makes it, and the one error it was never built to catch.
What automated preflight checks
A preflight profile is a rulebook for “is this file safe to image.” The checks that matter most in flexo:
- Fonts and text — missing or unembedded fonts, text below a minimum point size that won’t hold on plate, text not converted to outlines where required.
- Image resolution — raster art below the effective ppi the screen ruling needs, upsampled images masquerading as high-res.
- Transparency and overprint — unflattened transparency, knockouts that should overprint (and vice versa), white objects set to overprint and disappearing.
- Color and separations — stray RGB or Lab objects, spot colors that don’t match the customer’s named library, more separations than the job specs.
- Dielines and structure — dieline on the wrong layer or wrong spot color, missing bleed, content outside the trim.
- Barcodes — bar width reduction, magnification, and quiet zones checked against the symbology spec before the code prints unscannable.
Modern engines do more than flag — they auto-correct the deterministic problems (convert RGB to the plate space, embed fonts, add bleed) and surface only the judgment calls for a human.
The leading automated preflight tools
The flexo and packaging market clusters around a few names:
- Enfocus PitStop (+ Switch) — the de facto standard for PDF preflight. PitStop runs the checks and fixes; Switch automates the routing so files preflight on arrival without an operator opening them.
- Esko — preflight is built into Automation Engine and ArtPro+, tied directly into the rest of the packaging workflow and CDI imaging.

Any of these will keep bad files off your imager. They’re a mature, well-served category — which is exactly why the gap most shops have isn’t here.
Where automated preflight stops
Preflight answers one question: is this file technically correct to image? It does not answer the questions that decide whether the job makes money:
- Whose plate is this? Preflight doesn’t know the customer, the PO, or the negotiated rate card the job bills against.
- What does it bill out at? The imaged area off step-and-repeat is the billable number. Preflight never sees it, and it isn’t flowing into your invoice on its own.
- Is it on time, and was it a remake? Preflight has no concept of the due date, the rush fee, or whether this is the second pass on a customer’s file.
That’s not a flaw in the preflight tool — it’s a different system. Preflight protects plate quality; a prepress MIS protects the margin, owning the customer, the job ticket, plate-area billing, and the invoice, and exchanging data with the workflow in both directions.
The short version

The plate it green-lights still has to be tied to a customer, priced by area, and invoiced on time — and that’s the layer the workflow never touches.
